Last week I mentioned how unsustainable 3x models per day was getting. This is a much much lighter update than usual because I slowed down and I’ve been prepping for a DND campaign. I did manage to get 7 more models (putting us at 262 total), all halflings, done this week – I also added some “chonky” variants or effectively “heroic scale” where the heads and hands are larger – these are just skewed versions and then I re-optimized a bit. They don’t look great so I didn’t do it for the paladin but they might float some folks boat and I think heroic scale is definitely something worth exploring. When I get back to generating more 3d objects I will look at using the bounding box functionality to try to fill in the baseplate fully.
The other photos are from my efforts to paint a bunch of minis for my Curse of Strahd campaign. I don’t think anyone in my group follows this Patreon so this is safe – their player characters are the first of the painted images. These are Bright mini prints that we’ve been using for about a year and while I was on my “Scale” quest I realized that at 22mm in height they’re a bit too tall for 3ft halflings so I’ve made “to scale” versions of them around 15mm (Milo the orange one is abnormally tall for a halfling so he’s about 16.5mm which is like 3ft 3″ ouhwee)
I went a bit overboard with painting which was the opposite of sustainable effort on these hobbies. Same with prep – I’ve gone a bit crazy. I know some DMs like to use improv but I like to write the outline and all the notes and statblocks, print it all out and put it into a binder for use. I’ve been doing the math, building skill challenges and chases, adding secondary stakes, weak points and escape hatches.
Here are the models from this past week:
halfling_monk1 – A neat little monk in a fighting stance
halfling_cleric_female1 – A cleric with a holy symbol small version and an attempt at heroic scale
halfling_rogue1 – A rogue and heroic scale version, the edges on this guy were sharp and taking off the supports I got a nasty cut
halfling_wizard1 – A simple halfling wizard and heroic scale version (he’s pretty skewed on top so I don’t like him)
halfling_monk_female1 – Another little monk, these don’t work with my heroic scale technique because of their stance they would end up outside of the baseplate, I like them a lot tho!
halfling_fighter1 – A simple fighter with a big stick, for this one I skewed him down and then back up – his forehead is bigger but his head isn’t as flat as the others, heroic scale is a work in progress
halfling_paladin1 – Kind of an emo paladin, I was pretty happy with how this one turned out
I broke with tradition and posted all of these individually and then made a collection of them which you can see here: https://www.thingiverse.com/adamnant/collections/43069983/things – there are in-depth write-ups for each.
Beyond all that
I was playing with rigging a bit more – I have a rigged up troll I’m very excited about and when I have more time I want to create 2-3x versions of it in various poses. This one needs some clothes too so I may have to find a loincloth of some kind to slap onto it.
I played with Expo for the first time in a long while and put together a simple DND mobile app to help lookup statblocks. This was from a one off little coding session and most of the time was spent configuring Google Play, Expo and the Apple App store stuff but it’s another one I’d love to work on more
Publishing stuff to Printables and Thingiverse is time consuming and kinda boring – I really think I’d like to write a script that just magically does it for me once I’ve finished, printed and snapped a photo of a mini. This way I could also keep my write-ups for each managed centrally and wouldn’t have to log in to add notes or change categories etc… etc… etc… it’s probably against their terms of service but it might be fun 🙂
Thanks for following along to those who made it this far. Hopefully we can get back on track for next week!
