The use of AI for art is controversial and given that it lowers the barriers to entry there are bound to be bad actors. People who flood Amazon with book orders, post misinformation online or even people creating 3d printing assets. I like to think what sets me apart from “those” people is that I’m putting in a lot of work, publishing all of this for free and sharing information about my process.

The above is a message from the printables team that I received earlier this week. I think we have resolved the situation – I removed ALL of the AI art from my collections there and updated the earlier (lower quality) models. I redid the human collection, almost done the dwarves collection and have to get back to the “Elves” collection at some point. These collections now follow my “best” / “better” practices in terms of model generation which includes making thicker models, adding eyes and adding held items/weapons (where applicable).

The process is still evolving so this kinda thing is bound to happen – I’m counting the days for someone to post a negative comment (Eww AI art). For optimization I still have are with cloaks and white-space in them, model optimization around thin, sharp faces etc… and partway through this remake process I found that the pre-remesh (high res model) can be applied to the smaller model with a shrinkwrap modifier – effectively returning a bunch of the quality. I have about 170 models done as of writing this (this is injected into the schedule so a future post may say fewer) but I’ve redone a dozen or models (which don’t quite count but they don’t quite not count either).

Edit: I should have mentioned – I’ve also started to print EVERY one of these redone models. I might just make that an extra step to backup the validation of this work. I’m already finding ways to improve models and how best to print them so while it takes more time it adds to the value behind this work. Pictures here are of some of the models that I’ve printed lately – I’m going to need more storage bins AND I can’t wait until it’s warm enough to do resin printing again – I want to see how much of the detail comes out (also when I start that I can start posting pre-supported files toooo!!!)
